guys help a brother out. started fishing chunks, whole dead, and whole live bait this year. psyched i am getting lot's of takes and runs by big girls, but hook up ratio sucks. using single gami circles and octupus' 6/0-8/0 snelled almost broke my rod over my knee late last night in total frustration. decided to scream a cursing tyraid instead... THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE. CHEERS WILL IN CT
PLEASE... what exact hook brand/model,sizes plus optimum insertion location for the following?? eelman taught me eels already THANKS again Bill
Don't know about the dead bait and the chunking but for live lining, 3/0 3X treble thru the nostrils. When you get a run off you need to WAIT a good amount of time for the bass to turn the pogy in her mouth. Then you set. ---------- 2 In The Box
This is the exact way I live line and I have hooked dead ones the exact same way w/ success. Treble hooks don't miss much if you give the fish a good run to take the entire bait before you set. I give 5-8 count before set.
First of all, I don't really want to hear about these so-called big girls on this site anymore. Fish in the teens and low to mid twenties are NOT BIG GIRLS by any stretch of the imagination. They are school bass at best. The so-called or referred to KEEPER's is only a RAT at best. The fish is only six or seven year's old. That's like saying your 12 year old son, playing Pop Warner football is ready for the NFL. He isn't. Twenty eight to 32-inch fish are small.Nice fish to catch on light tackle but small fish non the less. Real BIG GIRLS will take a bait in one bite. No chasing, swirling, poking, looking, whacking, or any other nonsense. They simply take the bait and swim away. There isn't any mistake about it. Most of the fish we have here this year aren't big enough to swallow a full size bunker. Period. I know some of the best rod and reel fishermen out there and they aren't getting any of these so-called big fish this season. I know of only a hand full of 30-pound fish taken so far. Thirty pounders aren't big fish either, they are nice fish. Fish over 40 are big fish. Thirty six and thirty eight inch fish do not weigh 35 lbs are many are claiming. I've run into guys this year with 15-lbs fish saying they are 25. They haven't seen enough 25lbs fish to know the difference between the two is the problem. Hooks are not the problem, the size of the fish is. A good fish of 30-pounds or more has no problem swallowing a big menhaden in seconds. Smaller fish do. It's that simple. it's not complicated. We just don't have big fish here this year. At this point in time of the season we probably won't have any either. We have what we have and that's it. Trying to make school bass into BIG GIRLS is getting sickening. The catches and sizes this season are being exaggerated by a factor of 50 if not more. Add to that all the nuts and nit-whits on the water and its made for one amazing season of aggrivation to say the least. Thirty years ago a 30-pound fish wouldn't get you in the newspaper nor would it get you the turn of a head. Now 30-pound fish are not only just 30-pound fish, but we got people trying to make them twenty pounds heavier than they are. its absurd, its insanity, its ridiculous. No amount of hopeing, wishing, fantisizing, and praying is going to make them any bigger than what they REALLY are. I got one guy telling me he's cranking 40's over the side of this boat like no tomorrow where he fishes in his secret spot. You couldn't crank 40's in those numbers when the sea was loaded with 40's so how the fuck do you do it now? The answer is you don't. He speaks about 40's like they were a dime a dozen and those who have no idea or no knowledge of striped bass fishing believe these idiots. BIG GIRLS are 40-plus pound fish. Period. Always was and alwasy will be. BIG GIRLS also don't fight very well. One big run, they tire out and simply come in to the boat or shore. Every big fish I've ever caught has done that. Their are like old men. They tire easily, have no stamina, are lazy and their days of long, sustained runs are over. They also don't take 300 yards of line non-stop. If they do, your drag isn't set properly or you don't know how to fish. All that shit is for good fish stories and nothing more. In reality it doesn't happen. Clammer, tell these guys what real fish are. Tell them what a big fish really is, not this KEEPER shit we have to listen to today but real fish. Twenty eight inch fish used to be good market fish, not trophy's or something to attain. Sorry, but I get tired of hearing this shit over and over.
I agree with Jims post, not much more to say really, it does get old seeing all these fish in the 20s being called "Big Girls" or whatever else they call them now..
As for Bunker, to answer your original question, I also use VMC 3/0 4X Strong trebbles hooks and hook them in the nose...Nothing more simple than that, you will know when a "Big Girl" takes it...... ---------- Moderator
Finally a site host telling like it is, the only big fish I need is 28"long, big enough for the grill!!! recreational fishin hell I call it therapy. Gonna do some night fishing for the first time with JR saturday never done it B-4 were staying local, Wareham goto figure bait options got access to everything Link
Jim, maybe you been at it too long, caught too many. Most of these guys are young and excited about fishing and even a little competitive about it, but I think a lot of us started out that way. We all scratch around to catch a few and then we think we're experts and then even later realize we don't know shit, we're just looking for hungry fish that are trying to stay alive. Bass fishing is a lot like deer hunting in everyone wants the BIG one. These guys probably don't mean to be asses, they're just caught up in it. I wish I was a better fisherman and maybe someday I will be, but for now I just try to enjoy my time fishing.
You are absolutely correct. I have to realize that there are a lot of new guys out there that are just looking for information and to catch a few fish and for many guys a 28-inch fish is the fish of a lifetime. I apologize for going off on a new guy. Bad day, bad timing, frustrating season, too many trips, too tired. I could have put it in a much better view and still got the point across. it's our intention to educate the fishing community to the way it was, the way it is and the way it should be, and not the foolishness that many sites have on what is good fishing and what is not. Going off on someone or on a post isn't going to make that happen and will try to remember that in the future. Again, I apologize. keep fishing and enjoy your time on the water.
I'm glad we cleared that up, because I certainly do not have as much experience as most on this site, but I can hold my own. I met a charter boat captain about 5 yrs ago and became very good friends and we fish together when he is slow. In your long response you mentioned most 15-25lbs fish cannot take the bunker and I do know that from my experience, but were you also saying you should not let the fish run, turn the bait and try to get it in it's mouth before you set?
The reason I ask is some say set right away and this is the way I used to fish a few years ago and my hook ratio sucked. Now as i stated in last post, i give the fish time to adjust the bait or run w/ it and my hook up ratio is much better. It also usually belly hooks them, so that helps in not loosing fish. Very rearly do I see a short w/ Bunker, scup, shad, snapper blues, etc...so I've never killed a short.
Like I said, I have learned most from a guy w/ 55 yrs running the south county area and I enjoy this site because it appears most have many years in. I have been fluking for approx. 20 yrs, but became hooked on bass fishing about 8 yrs ago.
I catch alot of 20's ( and I weigh them ) and that is fine w/ me. An occasional 30 or 40 but mostly 20's. I admit, I do not get excited about a 28" fish anymore, but remember when I did. So i agree, we all just want to bend the rod and maybe put some food on grille every now and then.
Couldn't agree more... nothing bugs me more than seeing exaggerated fish. Everything on the web is 36" and 20lb+... Most wouldnt go 34" 14lbs if actually taped out....
You can be damn sure when I hang my first surf 40, it will be a legit 40; 39.9 ain't a 40!!!
As far as knowing a lot and becoming experts; I think this year, if the pattern continues, it will be shown must of us don't know shit!
To add to the hook issue... I always swore by 6/0 or 7/0 live bait hooks for eels, and 8/0 O'Shaunashy's for chunk/large baits, and yes trebles for live pogies and scup...
Well I hook them thru the nose with a 3/0 treble and just take for a swim through the bad neighborhood….. it seems to work for me I don’t weigh them too often…. mostly just go by size did catch an 34” on a sabiki rig the other day while looking for bait (that was fun)
geez, i am new to live bait and chunks...just wanted some help with hooks down here in ct where there have been many 35-45's taken (just sayin...) thanks anyway, take care
I've been using trebles, through the nose this year, livelining and have gut hooked 80% of my fish. I set the hook on a "4" count too. I switched last week to a # 8 Octopus circle hook, in front of the dorsal. I hooked every fish that swallowed the bunker and no gut hooks. I am going to stay with these for now. If I am fishing for the table, I'll stick with trebles.
all I give a fuck about is when am going to have a weekend with mrs link ;;
MR link >your welcome to have whatever one you want from the current stable ><><><>

i have been fishing salt for 3 yrs now not an expert by any means. This exageration factor first hit me when i landed my first "keeper" i measured it on shore 33" not a bad first keeper for a guy who use to catch large mouths on the same rod i used to land her... I then went out the next weekend and was fishing when a douche bag said he landed a 35lber....... i was in shock to her that next thing out of his mouth that the size was 33"........ i thought to my self how the hell did this wiegh 35lbs?? what did he stuff his foot in it's ass while it was on the scale??? I hope there will some day be the days of you old salt dogs
Clammer your funny, You'll have better luck hooking up with Pamela Anderson she like the smell of fish ,then spending a weekend with the Mrs. Link , well a wink of the eye and a twitch of the nose might work you smelly old bastage later Link PS: your gonna dream of blue fish all night long and blue balls all day
