another cold spring to fish in so far for 2010. Froze our asses off the other day. The bass are spread out right now. Found some fish in scattered schools to the East but they have remained deep for the most part. Seems a lot depends on the weather. Tuesday we have two foot swells easily with a gusty North/Northwest wind which made staying on top of the fish difficult.
We managed a few schoolies but missed an awful lot as well. The fish weren't hitting really aggresively at all. Had good anglers on board so it wasn't due to inexperience at all. More the way the fish were striking. Slow steady pick most of the morning on small to medium size bass.
I've been asked about the 57-inch fish that has been reported as being caught in the Seekonk River this week. I suppose that anything is possible, anywhere and at anytime, but I must admit that I find it hard to believe having fished the Seekonk River for decades. Never seen too many fish over the 30-pound mark taken there, even in the GOOD YEARS when fish were plentiful.
If a photo shows up then I suppose that will put all the hoop-laa to bed over this fish. And if not, I guess it will continue. A fish of that size, even if its skinny would have to be in the mid to high 50's if not the 60-pound range.
A quick note, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, (ASMFC) has voted to increase the commercial quota by 50-PERCENT!!!!! The proposal will be going out to public hearing in the near future. If you are opposed to this then I would suggest that you either go to a meeting or at least write a letter or an e-mail voicing your opinion. I cant' possibiliy see how an increase of that magnitude is justified in light of all the other obsticles facing the striped bass at this time. Especially Mycobacterious. It really makes no sense in my opinion.

been a strange year on the bay for me. Saw no real blitzs of small fish. Witnessed a few amaizing worm spawns. A few 20lb fish on bunker, and thats about it. I caught more fish in a day the last 4 years than I did all May. I am hoping June heats up and the bunker show/stay/dont get raped by pogie boats somewhere in the mid-bay. If not, I'll be nights and eels soon. Been quiet out here on this board, maybe I'll get some discussion going.
