if you are looking to put meat on the table then now is the time to do it. The bottom fishing inside the bay is absolutely out of this world. There are big scup (porgy's), sea bass, fluke, bluefish and even some stripers available.
Contrary to what has been published or posted on other sites there are fish inside the bay, both uppper and lower.
Are there 30 to 50 lbs available?? Absolutely Not!!! But there are other species as well as smaller bass up to keeper size inside the bay right now. Eating a bass of 28-inches is a lot better than chewing the rubber of those other bigger fish anyway.
Here's an over view of the last three times out Wed, Thru, and Friday of last week. I'll give total numbers of fish.
Scup---65
Black Sea Bass--37
Fluke---53 (18- were keepers)
Bluefish-- 42
Striped Bass--24 (11-keepers)
This should only get better as the fall approaches. At the end of August last year, while filming a show with Florida Sportsman Magazine, we had the best sea bass fishing day, every in my lifetime, right in the mid bay area. We totalled 62 seas bass in just over two hours with four lines in the water.
There is bait almost everywhere inside the bay. If anything, there is TOO much bait, it certainly isn't a lack of bait.
There are also lots of skipjacks this year, which we didn't see last year. And there are pogies in the Providence River as well as the Seekonk River if you're willing to chase them and snag them.
Most of the reports saying that there aren't any fish left in the bay are being posted by people who either can't or don't know how to fish. On the other side of the coin, we've caught fish all summer long. Has it been easy? No, not at all. It's been a lot of work, as well as working the right tides in the right places to get fish, but we've caught fish none the less.
Fish don't commit suicide during the late spring and summer months, especiall when numbers of fish are down to begin with. It takes work, time, and effort to catch them.
Has this been a tremendous season? No it has not. Each and everyday has been a lot of work, sometimes frustrating, but there are fish to catch.
We've turned our customers on to some great eating fish, with some good recipies for cooking them and all have been amazed at how good they are. (Scup, Sea Bass and Fluke).
One party even tried sea robin tails and e-mailed me it was the best fish meat they ever ate.
Inquire with us first before listening too or believing everything that is being posted on the chat sites. If the fishing is slow or no good, we'll tell you so. I don't go out for boat rides. We'll also let you know what is available, fun to catch, and good to eat. All these fish are being caught on very light spinning gear, so it's fun for the whole family. And as always, ther is NO SEA SICKNESS inside the bay.
