The Fishing Season is About to Begin.

April 20, 2009

It won't be long now that the fish will begin arriving inside Narragansett Bay and another spring will be upon us. Hopefully, it will be as good as last year. A few fish have already been reported being caught but it's still early in the season and the water this year is cold. Save The Bay has reported a winter algei bloom that doesn't occur very often anymore but is really a natural happening for our bay system when weather patterns are close to normal. The cold water is what triggers this bloom and its supposed to add life to the bay during the early spring and early summer months. Hopefully, that is what will happen this year.
White Ghost-2 is almost ready to go and will be in the water in six or seven days and we'll be out pre-fishing areas checking for early run fish.
We hope to have our brand new electronics on board before the end of May as well as a new radar system. Both are being provided by Lowrance Electronics. A new HD-10 Fish Finding until that sports a 10-inch High Definition screen, broadband capability, 3-screen viewing with fish finding, GPS Map and radar images all at the same time. The new radar unit is Digital and shows detail within 3-feet of the boat without the normal clutter or blow-back from old radar units. It also operates without almost NO radiation from the dome. With a new Navionics chip and 3-D imagirey of the bottom, our boat will have the latest in technology for finding fish and keeping our vessel safe at all times.
White Ghost-2 also has and holds all the necessary State and Federal permits pertaining to fishing, as well as the necessary permits to operate a Vessel For Hire as required by US Coast Guard regulations.
You can easily find a boat that will sail for much less money, so the captain can make his monthly boat payment and gas money expenses, but you won't find a boat that is more safe, in total and complete complience with all current state and federal regulations, or captains who have ACTUALL time on the water, 7-days a week, from May thru November and not on weekends or two days a week. Not enough people ask themselves how much is their life worth to catch a fish in safety???
After 18-years in business, I get steamed at the so-called charter operations that make the most outrageous claims as to their experience level, time on the water, and what they caught, when I dont' see ANY of these people on a daily basis when we are on the water seven days a week. It's simply amazing how the state and the Coast Guard let this happen, when ligitamate full-time operators are held to such higher standards.
Yes, it's that time of year for my yearly ranting and raving on this topic but its of such importance that it needs to be stated clearing and openly each and every year.
These other so-called professionals, who operate one to three days a week, if that, save somewhere between six and nine thousand dollars a year by simply avoiding the complience regulations, permits, and licensing fees, to operate professionally. THAT is how they can sail for so much less money, they don't make any money, they simply support their ego's and time on the water at someone else's expense. It's not about having a vialbe business, it's all about ego's and becoming some sort of legend in their own minds.
So when and if you do take a charter with someone, make sure you know who you are fishing with and what his experience and boating skills actually are. You maybe paying for something you aren't really getting. In other words, you're getting screwed!!
A friend of mine has a terrific saying: "When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys". Truer words were never spoken.
